I was born in January 1985, which makes me 25 + (current year - 2010) years old.
My first computer was an Apple Macintosh LC II running Mac OS 6. I was lucky to have enlightened parents who sat me down and showed me how to use Kid Pix, how to manage files, and how to type.
Later on, I would use my mother's Macintosh Quadra 660 AV and Photoshop 2.5 to apply filters to pictures of my family. I installed every font pack they had on diskette. I scanned clip art from books my mom had around the house.
My first experience on the Internet was with Usenet, where I asked a group of natural scientists about turkey vultures for a school project.
When I was 11 I told my parents I wanted to learn HTML. They found someone willing to teach me in his spare time. After a few sessions I could write HTML, CSS, and some Javascript in plain text.
In high school I discovered programming for real. I ended up taking AP Computer Programming twice—the second time as independent study where I taught myself how to administer Linux servers.
I have always been an autodidact. I have taught myself most of what I know. I spend a lot of my free time teaching myself new languages like Lisp, Erlang, Standard ML, and Haskell.
My other interests include 20th century American literature, cooking, and bread-making.
